The golfer must learn to bend from the hip
sockets correctly so the spine can be straight; the hips are tilted down
close to a 45° angle (try pointing your belt buckle at the ball). The
tailbone will feel up and the lower back arched when the hips are back
and tilted. Bending the knees slightly and taking a shoulder width
stance will insure better balance. Your weight will be evenly
distributed on both feet from toes to heels. Make sure you post up with
your left hip and left leg (see picture). The right knee should be
canted inward a little to help the player turn over the inside of the
right foot and avoid the common sway. The player might sense that the
lower back is more forward than the upper back.
The shoulders
should feel square and perpendicular to the spine and not hunkered over.
This allows the player’s arms to hang down more naturally in a relaxed
position. Also remember that the right shoulder is one hand lower in the
than the left shoulder because we grip lower with the right hand and
this helps set the spine correctly tilting to the right. Don’t forget
about the head. It needs to be right between the shoulders and behind
the ball.
Next look for the
golf club being perpendicular to the spine angle at address and this is
maintained in the takeaway position. Now the golfer is in position for
the club to swing on straighter and more correct angles.
These corrections
will guard you against common errors such as: An inside behind the body
takeaway, an open or closed clubface in the takeaway, the dreaded
reverse pivot
over swinging,
club across the line at the top with a flying right elbow, swaying and
poor balance. |

The Road to
Better Golf
Now that the winter
months are here, we will have our indoor practice and lesson area
open!
Practicing indoor can
be very effective, especially for students making significant swing
changes with their instructor. The reason being is that the student
isn’t caught up in ball flight. Therefore, they are more likely to
repeat the corrective swing changes and not be so concerned of what
the ball is doing. Many students give up on those swing changes
after observing poor ball flight outdoors.
Taking lessons and
working on your game indoors is also a great time to focus on those
key fundamentals such as grip, posture, and alignment. My first
installment of the series is on posture.
Posture is extremely
important because it influences swing plane and path. Secondly, good
posture maintains balance and as I always say “if you don’t have
balance in golf you don’t have anything”.
I hope you enjoy my
tips and I am looking forward to seeing you on the lesson tee this
fall and winter.
